Did you know that Oxford Business College doesn’t only offer classes and qualifications in business?
For a long time international students here could take lessons in English to help them in their studies, but at the start of this year the College also decided to offer evening English classes at a reduced rate for people in Oxford. Not surprisingly, these have been very popular.
The classes take place from 6.30pm to 8.00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and are open to all levels of English. “Just come into the College on George Street and we’ll answer any questions you have,” says Director of Studies Cassandra Gómez Sánchez. “We’ll give you a short test so we can put you in the right class for your level. You can even try a class to see if you like it. You can join us any time – it doesn’t have to be at the start of a term or the start of a week. And the classes only cost £60 for five weeks, which is very good value in Oxford.”
Students say they particularly like the convenient time of the classes. “I can go to work in the morning, then come and improve my English in the evening,” says Raphael, a 27-year-old Brazilian who came to the UK eight months ago. “The location in the centre of Oxford is good, too.” Raphael says he enjoys the classes and has made friends in them. But most importantly his English is improving. “When I arrived in England I couldn’t say anything,” he remembers. “And tomorrow I have an interview with BMW.”
There are classes for all levels from Beginner to Advanced. Cassandra says that the lessons are fun and interactive. “Our teachers are very well qualified with lots of experience and they know the students are the most important part of the classes. The teachers will make you practise your English and help you learn new things.”
Ani, 36, is a chef manager and business-course student from Romania who has lived in the UK for 10 years and already speaks excellent English. She decided to join the advanced class to help her studies. “I realised I had never learned English with a proper teacher so I’m not very good at academic writing and I felt like I was making mistakes,” she says. “These classes are helping me express myself and improving my general vocabulary.”
So, if you’re living in or around Oxford and have ever thought about taking English classes, what are you waiting for?
Classes cost £60 for 5 weeks (£4 per hour) or £7.50 per hour if you prefer to pay week by week.
Times: 6.30-8.00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The College is open from 6.00pm before each class for our Language Club, an optional free opportunity to practise speaking English with other students.
